GDCh – I’m in: Ivan Huc

I did my undergraduate education and went half-way through my academic career in France, until I moved to Munich three years ago. For as long as I can remember, I have been a member of the French Chemical Society (SCF). Learned societies are unique entities that connect generations – from students to retired professionals, varied subdisciplines, as well as multiple sectors of activity ranging from high school education, to academic research and industry. It is like the trunk of a tree carrying its branches. Without the trunk, the branches would dry and die. Being connected is essential to keep up with the times, to contribute to change what needs to be changed, and preserve what needs to be preserved. We are all encouraged to step or think “out of the box”. The least we can do is be acquainted with the boxes right next to us, and learned societies help us do this. Chemistry is a discipline one often embraces with passion (a personal, teacher and mentor statement), that is, something easy to share with others. So, now that I belong to the German chemistry community, joining the GDCh was a very natural step to make. The good thing is that it is not compromising one’s scientific or
