For the last meeting of the year 2022, the Board of the German Chemical Society met in Ludwigshafen on December 8th at the invitation of BASF.Before the start of the meeting, the host BASF invites the participants to a tour of the plant site and Board member Dr. Carla Seidel briefly introduces BASF. GDCh President Dr. Karsten Danielmeier then welcomes the participants, including representatives of the partner organizations German Bunsen Society for Physical Chemistry (DBG), Conference of Chemical Faculties (KFC) and Fachbereichstag Angewandte Chemie und Chemieingenieurwesen (FACh), who are invited to attend the last meeting of a year, and opens the meeting at 1:00 pm.After the introductory formalities, the reports of the partner organizations follow. The newly elected chairman of the KFC, Prof. Guido Kickelbick, emphasizes the great importance of recruiting young talent in chemistry courses and points in particular to the shortage of teachers in schools. Other focal points of the KFC are the strengthening of sustainability in chemistry studies, digitalization, but also the impact of the chemical law on university education. The new chairman of FACh, Prof. Wilhelm A. Buckermann, who was also recently elected, confirms the decline in the number of applicants in the MINT subjects, especially in chemical engineering and process technology, and the need for a joint action alliance of universities, professional associations, politics and industry to effectively combat the impending shortage of skilled workers and especially students. Finally, DBG Executive Director Dr. Elisabeth Kapatsina, who is participating on behalf of the 1st Chairman of the DBG, Dr. Florian Budde, explains the current activities of the Bunsen Society. The Bunsen Meeting in Giessen was a success, and the next Bunsen Meeting will be held in Berlin in June 2023 on the topic of „Physical Chemistry of the Energy Transition“. In the coming year Prof. Ralf Ludwig, Rostock, will take over the office of the 1st chairman.<h2 type="main">Publications</h2>The following is a brief overview of the GDCh‘s activities in scientific publishing. The flagship of the GDCh journals, Angewandte Chemie, is developing excellently. At 16.8, the impact factor is higher than ever before. The Angewandte Chemie Council, which was newly established in 2020, has proved its worth and meets regularly with representatives of the publisher to discuss strategic aspects relating to the journal. There is also good news to report from the European journals: The relaunch in early summer 2020 of ChemPubSoc Europe, the association of 16 continental European chemical societies founded in 1995 under the leadership of the GDCh, which currently publishes 19 journals together with Wiley-VCH, under the new name Chemistry Europe was very successful. During the EuChems Chemistry Congress in August 2022 in Lisbon, the new flagship journal ChemistryEurope was announced. ChemistryEurope is a genuine Gold Open Access Journal and will be launched next year. At this year‘s Chemistry Europe Annual Meeting in Weinheim, Germany, in October, it was decided, among other things, to convert the journal ChemElectroChem to Gold Open Access next year. Other journals will follow step by step.<h2 type="main">GDCh affairs</h2>As every year, the election of the deputy presidents follows. On the proposal of Dr. Karsten Danielmeier, the two incumbents, Katharina Uebele and Prof. Peter R. Schreiner, are elected for a second term of office without any dissenting votes. Subsequently, the Board decides on the list of candidates for the election to the GDCh Board, which will take place in the summer of next year. The GDCh Treasurer, Dr. Timo Fleßner, who is connected via video, presents his report on the budget situation. The General Assembly 2021 had approved a balanced budget for the current fiscal year. This planned result will not be met, rather a deficit will have to be expected. In particular, the GDCh‘s asset management will have to suffer in 2022. Too many geopolitical events mean that the surplus from asset management will not be sufficient this time to compensate for the negative results in the non-material area. However, the write-offs to be made this year are only accounting value adjustments, which will not be realized and in all likelihood can be made up again in the next few years without any problems. The finances of the GDCh are thus again in good order in 2022. The Board takes note of the report with approval and thanks the Finance Director Volker Kilz and the Treasurer for their successful and prudent work. The updated rules of procedure of the Liebig Association for Organic Chemistry are confirmed, as well as the guidelines for GDCh Divisions for the organization of their meetings. The corresponding committee presents its draft for a revision of the GDCh Statutes, which is approved by the Board. The draft will be presented soon in the Nachrichten aus der Chemie as well as in the General Assembly and will then be submitted to the members for voting.The President and the Speaker of the Divisions in the GDCh Board, Dr. Rolf Albach, report on the statutory meeting of the Chairmen of the GDCh Divisions and Working Parties, which took place in Fulda on November 2 and 3, 2022. They praised the constructive atmosphere and the open discussion culture. An important topic was the proposal to strengthen the public relations work of the Divisions and to establish half a staff position for this purpose. A concept for this is to be worked out by the next board meeting. The following is the report of the President on the online meeting with the chairmen of the GDCh local sections on October 26. The two-hour meeting was attended by 30 local sections’ chairmen. Another report item is the Parliamentary Evening on October 19, 2022 at the Parliamentary Society in Berlin. The event was jointly organized by the societies united in the alliance „Science Connects“ (GDCh as well as DPG, DVGeo, DMV and VBIO). A total of eleven members of parliament and 22 of their assistants informed themselves about the expertise available in mathematics and the natural sciences and about current approaches to solving the current challenges relating to the overarching themes of climate and energy. As Dr. Karsten Danielmeier reported, the event was a great success and the guests were very interested. The board unanimously recommends that this format be further developed and continued with other important topics.Finally, the Board confirms the application for supporting GDCh membership of the Heidelberg University Library.<h2 type="main">Prizes and awards</h2>The Board decides to make use of its right of nomination for the German Environmental Award again this year and to re-submit its proposal from the previous year. Furthermore, the Board decides to follow the recommendation of the responsible commission and to open the GDCh prizes for teams without restrictions from now on and to adapt the calls for entries accordingly. Subsequently, the Board takes note of the award opportunities of the GDCh prizes as well as the prizes of the foundations affiliated with the GDCh with approval. The Board confirms the recommendations of the selection committees and decides to award the proposed persons with the respective GDCh prizes in 2023. Another topic is the name for the former Alfred Stock Prize, which, according to the Board resolution of March 4, 2022, will no longer be awarded under this name because of Alfred Stock‘s past in the Nazi regime. The responsible committee recommends to the board to award the prize under the name Marianne Baudler Prize in the future. Marianne Baudler (1921 – 2003), a long-time member of the GDCh, was Professor of Inorganic Chemistry and Director of the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Cologne. She was awarded the Alfred Stock Memorial Prize in 1986. The Board unanimously followed this recommendation.<h2 type="main">Appointments and miscellaneous</h2>The Board appoints Dr. Tom Wagner (Potsdam) as a new member of the Teacher Training Commission, Prof. Ollala Vázquez (Marburg) as delegate of the GDCh in the EuChemS Di-vision of Chemistry in the Life Sciences and Dr. Rolf Albach (Leverkusen) to the GDCh Commission on Equal Opportunities.Under „Miscellaneous“, the Board of Directors informs itself about the fire in the Liebig Museum in Giessen and the damage caused. The chairman of the Liebig-Gesellschaft zu Gießen, Prof. Gerd Hamscher, asks for support in the form of an appeal for donations. Dabei haben wir den Anspruch, unserer Leserschaft mit jedem Newsletter das JCF näherzubringen und so den Zugang zu Veranstaltungen so einfach wie möglich zu gestalten. Auch unser übersichtlicher Kalender mit allen Events, den man am Ende jedes Newsletters findet, soll hierbei helfen. Mit einem Klick kann man hier die Events zum eigenen Google-Kalender hinzufügen und die Termine sind auch mit der <a href="https://GDCh.app" target="_blank">GDCh.app</a> verlinkt. Also immer schön den Terminkalender in der App pflegen.HighlightsKontinuierlich arbeiten wir daran, den Newsletter weiter zu verbessern und so ändert sich nicht nur manchmal das Design, sondern auch die Funktionen. Wer Adleraugen hat, wunderte sich etwa, warum der Newsletter im Mai auf einmal ein wenig anders aussah. Dieser Newsletter war nämlich der erste, der mit einem neuen Programm erstellt wurde. Das bedeutete aufwändige Transfer- und Designarbeit, aber auch neue Möglichkeiten, mit denen wir uns vertraut machen mussten. Im darauffolgenden Juni-Newsletter waren dann alle Startschwierigkeiten überwunden und wir führten als neue Funktion die Shortlinks in der Einleitung ein. Hiermit könnt ihr seitdem sofort zum Unterpunkt springen, der euch am meisten interessiert – Highlights, regionale Events, JCF-Teams &amp; Fachgruppen, Sonstiges oder Kalender.Der Newsletter ist jedoch nicht nur ernst und so erlauben wir uns manchmal auch einen kleinen Spaß und „gründeten“ im letzten April-Newsletter das neue JCF-Team Meme – April, April. In unserem neuesten Projekt – der Reihe „Get to know Team …“ – stellen wir im Newsletter in den kommenden Monaten die Projekte der JCF-Teams und ihre Mitglieder vor. Hier gibt es bestimmt noch das eine oder andere über unsere Teams zu erfahren – seid gespannt.TeamworkUnser eigenes Team besteht aktuell aus neun aktiven Mitgliedern und wird geleitet von Kerstin Köble und Alexandra Tietze, die im Mai die Co-Teamleitung von Chris Heintz übernommen haben. Die Aufgaben des Teams umfassen den monatlichen Newsletter und Kooperationen mit den Ressorts Social Media und Webmaster des JCF-Bundesvorstands.Claudia, Felicitas und Michael legen mit ihren Texten zu neuen Events monatlich den Grundstein für den Newsletter und seit ein paar Monaten belebt Asvitha außerdem den redaktionellen Instagram-Kanal (@redaktion_jcf) mit Ankündigungen und Newsletter-Highlights.Alle Veranstaltungen landen auch bei Anna Rustler, die im Bundesvorstand für das Ressort Social Media verantwortlich ist. André und Michael unterstützen außerdem Chris Heintz, der im Bundesvorstand die Website betreut, mit der Gestaltung von Seiten und der Übersetzung von Texten.Als Team Redaktion unterstützen wir außerdem den Bundesvorstand beim Workshop „How-to-Vorsitz“, welcher zweimal im Jahr im Rahmen der Treffen der JCF-Regionalvorsitzenden stattfindet. Hier zeigen wir, wie Veranstaltungen optimal beworben und Regionalforum auf der Website und Social Media präsentiert werden.Arbeit am NewsletterDoch wie landen die Veranstaltungen eigentlich im Newsletter? Beiträge für den Newsletter können bis zum 26. des Monats bei uns eingereicht werden. Dafür gibt es das Medienformular auf unserer Website. Das bietet sich besonders für Regionalforen, Teams und Fachgruppen an, die Hybrid- oder Online-Veranstaltungen anbieten. Auch Teilnehmende für Konferenzen, Seminare oder Projekte können gerne über uns geworben werden. Zusätzlich sucht unser Team in der <a href="https://GDCh.app" target="_blank">GDCh.app</a>, auf Instagram und in E-Mails nach weiteren Veranstaltungen, die für JCF-Mitglieder interessant sein können.Diese Schritte wollen wir in Zukunft über die App vereinfachen, sodass man uns beim Eintragen eines Termins direkt um Werbung im Newsletter und auf Social Media bitten kann. Erleichtert uns gerne die Arbeit und pflegt die Termine in die App ein.Anschließend beginnt die eigentliche Arbeit am Newsletter: Zu jeder Meldung werden kurze einheitliche Texte geschrieben oder die eingesendeten Formulierungen überprüft. Die Events werden in dem Programm Sendinblue in unsere Newsletter-Vorlage eingefügt und in der Testmail werden diese dann noch einmal korrekturgelesen und die zugehörigen Links überprüft.Der JCF-Newsletter entsteht dabei nicht an einem Abend und so haben wir gerade im vergangenen Jahr unsere Arbeit zeitlich entzerrt und den Workflow optimiert. Die Teammitglieder markieren in unserem gemeinsamen Online-Workspace, welche Aufgaben sie übernehmen und teilen sich die Zeit frei ein. Das funktionierte in den vergangenen Monaten so gut, dass beim gemeinsamen Meeting am 28. des Monats meistens nur noch Kleinigkeiten ergänzt werden mussten. Januar 2023 wurde der Evonik-Preis für herausragende wissenschaftliche Leistung, während der Master- und Doktorarbeit aus dem Jahr 2022 an der Universität Münster verliehen. Die durch Evonik unterstützte Auszeichnung wurde in Kooperation mit dem JCF Münster bereits zum zehnten Mal verliehen.Begleitet wurde die Veranstaltung von Sandra Gröne von Evonik Creavis mit einem Vortrag über die Zukunftsforschung: „Unboxing the Future“. Darin stellte die Foresight Managerin unterschiedliche von Evonik prognostizierte Zukunftsszenarien vor. In der anschließenden Fragrunde wurden die Szenarien diskutiert und auf die Bedeutung des Foresight Managements eingegangen.Im Anschluss wurden die Evonik-Preise von Christoph Weckbecker von der Evonik Creavis feierlich verliehen. Den Preis für die Masterarbeit erhielt Henning <link href="#nadc20234135784-fig-0002">Meteling aus der Arbeitsgruppe von Bart Jan Ravoo für die Entwicklung eines reversiblen Nanostrukturierverfahrens von Oberflächen basierend auf Arylazoisoxazol-Photoschalter. Henning war live zugeschaltet, um seine Auszeichnung entgegenzunehmen.<figure xml:id="nadc20234135784-fig-0002"><figure><img alt="image" src="https://media.graphassets.com/PDFEggpASn2sPeknig65"><figcaption><label>Abb.2: </label>Bart Jan Ravoo, Jonas Elfert, Christoph Weckbecker und Henning Meteling im Hintergrund. Fotos: Mohammed-Ali Aghili</figcaption></figure></figure>Marcel <link href="#nadc20234135784-fig-0003">Macke aus der Arbeitsgruppe von Uwe Karst erhielt den Evonik-Promotionspreis. Er entwickelte eine Methode zur Analyse von gadoliniumbasierten Kontrastmittel in Oberflächen- und Trinkwasser. Mit dieser lassen sich die relevanten Gadoliniumspezies chromatographisch trennen und mit den bisher besten Nachweisgrenzen quantifizieren.
